Dolly Parton Looking for the right person to play her on Broadway – and Jenna Bush Hager She throws her name in the ring.
The TV personality, 43, has left Hoda Kotb Laughing after the audition for the live show on Episode Monday, December 9 to Today with Hoda and Jenna. “I feel like it would be a dream, Dolly, if my friend Jenna Bush Hager had a chance at something,” said the 60-year-old Kotb. “So Jenna would try.”
Before channeling Parton, 78, in a curly platinum blonde wig, Posh Hager noted that her impromptu audition would be presented under the show's official hashtag, #SearchForDolly.
“You look like that George WashingtonKotb joked about Bush Hager's wig, replying, “This is the only wig we can get on such short notice.”
Instead of singing, Bush Hager gave a dramatic reading of Parton's hit song “Jolene,” saying to the camera: “Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene / I'm begging you, please don't take my man / Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene / Please don't You take it just because you can.
She continued, reciting the first verse of the song: “Your beauty is incomparable / With flaming brown locks / With ivory skin and emerald green eyes / Your smile is like a spring breeze / Your voice is soft like summer rain / And I can’t compete with you, Jolene.”
Bush Hager removed her wig and bowed while Kotb and the show's off-camera crew gave a round of applause for her performance. “I think if Dolly is watching our show, which she tends to be, all she (Jenna) wants is to be an extra,” Kotb said.
Bush Hager indicated that she would like to have a “very small part,” perhaps as a member of the musical cast. Poking fun at her co-host, Kotb shared the special role she had in mind for Bush Hager.
“Just (put) it in the back, so you can drink coffee,” she joked.
Bush-Hager auditioned her in the middle of a conversation about Parton's new project. Earlier this month, the country music legend put out an open call to find young artists to represent her Dolly: An Original MusicalWhich will follow her life story.
“Now, whether you're pursuing your dreams in a small town, or you've spent years performing on stages across the country, I want to give you the opportunity to help me take my story to Broadway, and maybe even act,” she said on Thursday, December 5.
