Jaron 'Boots' Ennis posted on social media that 2025 will be a “phenomenal” year for him. The 27-year-old is targeting the welterweight titles to become an undisputed champion.

Some believe Potts lacks the ambition, courage and sense of adventure to move up to 154 and 160 in bigger-money fights.

Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) is still hoping to unify the 147 welterweight division, having turned down the opportunity to move up to 154 for a bigger challenge against interim WBC junior middleweight champion Virgil Ortiz Jr.

147: Dead end?

Some boxing fans believe that Potts lacks the courage and ambition to put more effort into his career. He prefers to play it safe, working tirelessly to achieve his goal of becoming an undisputed champion in a deadweight welterweight division.

It must be frustrating for the promoter Eddie Hearn Because there are a lot of big names at 154, 160 and 168, and he can match Boots Ennis if he is willing to take risks in his career. Staying at 147 is more of a dead end for Potts, 27, and Hearn than anyone should know.

Hearn may be able to accommodate Potts in 2025 by setting him up for one welterweight unification bout, but nothing more.

Unless Hearn is willing to pay a king's ransom for the other 147-pound champions, they won't fight Ennis because their chances of winning are slim. They better hold on to their belts and Milk them.

Potts' recent poor performance against Karen Choukhodjian on November 9th may have destroyed what little ambition he still had in his body, leaving the risk-averse fighter we see now.

Hearn's wasted effort

Karen schooled Ennis for 12 rounds, outmaneuvering and overpowering him in front of his fans. Afterwards, I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall to hear what Hearn had to say in private about his thoughts on Bute's performance. I highly doubt Hearn will re-sign for Boots when his Matchroom contract expires because he's not going anywhere.

There are plenty of big fights that Hearn can match Potts in if he is brave and wants to challenge himself by moving up to 154, 160, 168 and 175. He has the ability to compete in all those divisions, but he won't do it. There's something holding him back.

I'd say the best Hearn can hope for with Ennis in 2025 is a paltry unification fight against WBA welterweight champion Imantas Stanionis. That's it. He brought it back with Karen in a three-way after that match.
