Sebastian Fordora says his next title defense for the WBC and WBO junior middleweight belts “should” be against Errol Spence. Fans have mixed feelings about Fundora, 6'5 1/2″, battling a burned-out Spence because he hasn't performed well since his October 10, 2019 car crash.
Was Spence washed up?
Errol has fought just three times in the last four years since 2020, and has been out of the ring since suffering a ninth-round knockout against Terence Crawford on July 30, 2023. In that fight, Spence looked like a broken shell of a fighter. It was years ago.
Spence's activity since 2020
– Terence Crawford: Loss by TKO 9
– Jordenis Ugas: UD 12 wins
– Dany Garcia: UD 12 wins
His reflexes, speed, and strength were gone. He was beaten by Crawford, who was made to look better than he actually was by the appearance of a physically exhausted Spence. During the interview during the fight, you could tell that Spence wasn't right. He looked like he had a mouth full of marble and was speaking in slow motion.
Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) and former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 21 KOs) have been mentioned as the next fight since Sebastian defeated WBO 154-pound champion Tim Tszyu on March 30 earlier this year .
Spence stepped into the ring at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas immediately after Fundora's 12-round split decision against Tszyu, making it clear they would fight next.
“That should be the next one. I think it will be a good fight with a lot of action. He throws a lot of punches. I throw a lot of punches,” Sebastian Fundora told BoxNation about him and the Errol Spence fight next. “He’s an advanced fighter. I consider myself so. “It will be good for Mexican fans in America.”
Fundora Chance
Unsurprisingly, Fundora, 26, is excited to fight Spence because his chances of winning would be high. Fans would rather see Fundora take on someone more compelling, like the IBF 154-pound champion Bakram Murtazaliev Next instead of Spence. At least that fight will be more athletic.
Fundora is seen as a weak card champion and will only retain his title if carefully matched. His reign will be over if he fights someone of quality like Murtazaliev, Virgil Ortiz Jr., Serhiy Bohachuk, or Israel Madrimov.
Fundora should have a rematch against Brian Mendoza to avenge his seventh-round knockout loss on April 8, 2023. That was only a year ago, and he has done nothing to head toward fighting Mendoza again.
