India produced a dominant performance to secure a massive 295-run win over Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Optus Stadium in Perth. With the win, India ended Australia's unbeaten run at the stadium since 2018 and bounced back strongly from their recent 0-3 loss to New Zealand.

The match concluded quickly in the final session of the fourth day, with India needing just five overs to take the last two Australian wickets. Washington Sundar bowled Nathan Lyon for a duck, and debutant Harshit Rana sealed the win by dismissing Alex Carey for 36, leaving Australia all out for 238 in their chase of 510.

Single India despite the difficult start

India's first innings was far from ideal as they were bowled out for 150 overs. Josh Hazlewood wreaked havoc with figures of 4/29, while debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy batted valiantly with 41 runs in his maiden outing. Rishabh Pant contributed 37 runs, and KL Rahul showed resilience before being controversially dismissed.

However, India's bowlers managed to turn the tide under the fading Perth light. Jasprit Bumrah (3/30) led a stunning attack, getting the valuable wicket of Steve Smith for the Golden Duck. Debutant Harshit Rana (1/16) and Mohammed Siraj came on board, combining for Australia's 104 runs and giving India a slender lead of 46 runs.

Jaiswal and Kohli shine in the second half

India capitalized on their narrow advantage with a strong batting display in the second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was dismissed for a duck earlier, redeemed himself with a starry 161, his fourth Test century. Along with KL Rahul (77), Jaiswal put together a massive 201-run opening partnership.

Virat Kohli then added to Australia's misery With his 30th Test hundred, he finished unbeaten on 100. India declared at 487/6, setting Australia an imposing target of 510 runs.

Australia falters under pressure

Australia faced a daunting task and began their chase disastrously, losing three quick wickets late on the third day. Nathan McSweeney's forgettable debut ended with a duck, while Marnus Labuschagne fell lbw to an inside fielder.

Despite valiant efforts by Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47), Australia's bowlers faltered against relentless Indian bowling. Bumrah (3/42) and Siraj (3/51) were instrumental in dismantling the Australia line-up.

Keynote presentations and looking to the future

  • Nitish Kumar Reddy: He showed promise on his debut with a crucial 41 points in difficult conditions.
