Hundreds of people are feared dead in Mayotte after Cyclone Chido hit French territory in the Indian Ocean on Saturday.
Entire settlements were flattened when the cyclone brought winds of more than 225 kilometers per hour (140 mph), with people living in temporary shelters particularly hard hit.
Video footage shows police officers holding down a door as the hurricane made landfall, leaving a hole in the roof of the building being used as a shelter.
One resident said the wind took everything away while he was standing in line to buy food from a store.
It is feared the death toll could eventually reach thousands once the damage is fully assessed and as rescue workers continue to work to reach some communities.
