Here are three tips from an organizational psychology professor and author of Likeable Badass. Alison Fragal On how to set yourself up for success in 2025.

Set your goals

First, start by defining what you want to achieve in the new year — or even in a few years.

“We want to look forward to a point that represents a milestone we want to achieve,” Fragal says, adding that “I've built a product, or I've started a mentoring program” could be an example. Everything you want to be able to put on your resume or that you will be proud of.

Then, you want to work backwards from there and come up with some actionable steps on how to do it. In 2025, these steps will help you make choices when looking at your to-do list, Fragal says. “When not everything can be done, which of these things will move me most toward achieving these goals?”

Identify “three to five relationships” to help achieve them

Once you know what you want to achieve, identify “three to five relationships that help you achieve that goal,” Fragal says. These can be people who have built similar products or held the position you want to reach, and anyone you think can help you make that progress.

Then “start thinking about how you can add value to their lives in 2025,” she says. Can you help them with the project they're working on? Can you provide a helpful introduction? Can you share some new research relevant to their work? Helping them first could turn your relationship into Something more fundamental can be reciprocated.

Try to reach out to them twice a year to maintain those relationships. This way, when they are finally able to help you, you will have established that connection and will have a natural opportunity to ask questions.
