A 90-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease received encouragement from three generations of her family as she competed in the Over 70 Weightlifting Competition in Taipei, Taiwan.

During the three-round competition, Qing Qin Qin Mei lifted 35, 40 and 45 kg.

Zheng Chen said: “I want to tell all the elderly to join the exercise. You don't need to work very hard, but this is to maintain health.”

Competition officials say the event aims to help Taipei's aging population, as the country is on track to become an “aging society”: a designation given to countries in which at least 21 percent of the population is 65 or older.

Taiwan aims to establish 288 fitness clubs for seniors across the country by 2025, and reports predict the average age will reach 48.7 years by 2030.
