Nick Clegg, Meta's head of global affairs, will leave the social media platform and will be replaced by Joel Kaplan, a prominent Republican known for overseeing the company's relations with conservatives.
In a post on Meta's Facebook page on Thursday, CleggThe former leader of the Liberal Democrats and deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom said he would leave the company after seven years. He added that he would spend “a few months handing over the reins” and representing Facebook at international gatherings before moving on to “new adventures.”
Kaplan previously served as deputy chief of staff in the White House during the George W. Bush administration and is known for his handling of the company's ties to Republicans.
In the past, Facebook has denied allegations that certain figures, including Kaplan, exerted political influence over the decision-making processes and treatment of politicians.
These changes come just weeks before Donald Trump, who has been repeatedly accused dead and other platforms for censorship and silencing of conservative speech – are set to return to the White House.
Some Big Tech executives, who previously had cool relationships with the Republican leader, have taken steps to impeach the president-elect. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has had dinner with Trump at his Florida home at Mar-a-Lago since the US election and congratulated him on his victory. Semafor first reported the changes.
