GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador (Reuters) – Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glass has been evacuated from prison after an assassination attempt, his lawyer said on Sunday, blaming the government for the situation.
Sonia Gabriela Vera called on the United Nations and other international organizations to intervene after what she called an “assassination attempt” on Glass in La Roca prison.
Commenting on a post claiming Glass was taken from prison amid threats to his life from rebellious prisoners, Vera said on Channel
Vera added: “His emergency evacuation confirms what we have repeatedly denounced: that they are deliberately tampering with his life.” “If anything happened to him, it would be a crime for the state.”
Ecuador's prison agency, SNAI, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Glass was arrested in April after Ecuadorian security forces stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he was holed up after requesting asylum.
While Glass's supporters say the arrest is politically motivated, the former vice president has been convicted of corruption on two other occasions.
Glass also faces charges of misusing funds raised to help rebuild the coastal province of Manabi after a devastating 2016 earthquake.
