(Reuters) – Memorial services for former US President Jimmy Carter are expected to be held over six days in Georgia and Washington, DC, after his death on December 29 at the age of 100.

Here are some details about his funeral plans:

When is the funeral?

Carter's state funeral (NYSE:), a national honor traditionally reserved for heads of state, began Saturday, Jan. 4, with a ceremony in Carter's home state of Georgia, according to a schedule published by the U.S. Army.

It culminates in a Mass at the National Cathedral on January 9 in Washington, then a private burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Parade, public viewing

Carter's motorcade will take him through his hometown and then on to Atlanta, with a stop at the state Capitol and then the Carter Presidential Center, where he will rest in peace until he is flown to Washington on Tuesday, January 7.

In Washington, he will lie in state in the Rotunda of the US Capitol from January 7 until the morning of January 9. George H.W. Bush was the last US president to lie in state there, a tradition dating back to the era of Abraham Lincoln.

Members of Congress are scheduled to pay their respects to Carter starting at 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, with the public invited from 7 p.m. until midnight Tuesday, and again on Wednesday from 7 a.m. Eastern.

Funeral services will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, January 9 at 10 a.m. ET.

President Joe Biden said last year that Carter had asked him to deliver the eulogy at the service. President-elect Donald Trump said he would attend.

Carter will then be flown to Georgia where he will be buried in a private ceremony in Plains.

How to view or attend Carter's events

Jimmycartertribute.org, a site connected to the Carter Center, has a live stream of the events.

Local news channels are also showing live webcasts from the Carter Presidential Center, including CNBC's 11 Alive and FOX 5 in Atlanta.

Carter's viewing in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda will be broadcast live online by C-Span and by other national broadcast stations. Washington National Cathedral will stream Carter's Mass live on its YouTube channel.

The public can enter the Carter Center in Georgia from 7 p.m. on January 4 to 6 a.m. on January 7 and the U.S. Capitol through the Visitor Center on January 7 and 8. Both will undergo a security check.

Other general notes

Biden declared a national day of mourning on January 9. He ordered American flags to be flown at half-mast for 30 days at military sites and federal buildings.

In lieu of flowers, Carter's family requests donations to his eponymous center in Atlanta to assist in its work in the areas of global health, peace and human rights.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are scheduled to close on Thursday, in a customary gesture to honor deceased presidents.
