Yohan Bakayoko is highly regarded by Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell
Newcastle United will now struggle to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko in this window, with the move seen as virtually dead, sources have reported. Caught out.
Although the Magpies are set to accept a £10m bid for right-forward Miguel Almiron from MLS club Atlanta United, bringing in additional cash, a move for Bakayoko is now unlikely to happen.
Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell has identified the youngster as a priority target The former Monaco executive looks for quality value for money purchases.
But PSV's valuation means Eddie Howe's side will not be able to afford Bakayoko. The Eredivisie club is at the top of the league and does not want to lose one of its stars in the middle of the season.
Newcastle managed to avoid any problems related to the PSR after announcing on Wednesday that no Premier League club would violate the rules during the three-year period from 2021 to 2024.
Although the club now has money, Jacob Murphy's form has also tempered Newcastle's desire to sign a right-winger. The 29-year-old has ten goals in 14 Premier League appearances this season.
Eddie Howe talks about Newcastle's PSR problems
Ahead of the PSR announcement, Eddie Howe, who oversaw Newcastle's 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night, spoke about the club's PSR problems last summer. The Magpies were forced to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton to avoid a potential points penalty.
“The last thing we want to do, or I want to do as a club manager, is sell academy products that have the potential to play for this team for many years,” Howe said.
“Elliott was an example of that – he was the last sale we wanted to make. We knew his qualities and he broke into the team at the end of last season. He performed really well in a variety of roles for us.
“But we were literally faced with no other choice at that moment. With 48 hours to go, we had to make a decision that we didn't want to make. It's always going to be our last option to do that. But when you put it all together and say: 'Okay, it's a points deduction and a breach.' PSR or make a sale, I think you have to make the sale.”
