Much has been said about it Elizabeth HurleyThe famous Versace dress that stole the spotlight from her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant In his country Four weddings and a funeral Premiere in 1994.
Grant, 64, had an initial reaction that said it all, Hurley, 59, revealed on the Dec. 11 episode of the show. “Cooperative with equipment” Podcast. “When he saw me there for the first time, he said, ‘Christ.’”
And can you blame him? The daring design, with a plunging neckline and cutouts secured with gold Medusa head safety pins, was nothing short of daring, even by red carpet standards.
like Donatella Versace He explained to InStyle In 2019: “That's when we started to realize the power of the red carpet and celebrities to create topics of conversation.” Versace (69 years old) continued: “No one could really imagine this amazing reaction, or that Liz would steal the spotlight.”
Hurley didn't seem to have a date in mind. Just look at the shots (many of them on the red carpet), and you'll notice a floppy-haired Grant smiling sheepishly next to her, unable to believe his luck. (The couple dated from 1987 to 2000, and since their split, they've remained close; the actor is also godfather to Hurley's son, Damien, 22, with whom she shares Steve Bing.)
To Grant's credit, he was the one who asked for a “favor” after several fashion houses turned down his request to borrow a dress for the premiere because they didn't know who she was. (At the time, Hurley was a model, and was not known in Hollywood except for a few small roles.)
“Gianni “I made this dress for a confident woman who is not afraid to break the rules,” Donatella said. Harper's Bazaar to her late brother in 2023. “Liz embodied all of this in an extraordinary way.”
It is perhaps also unusual, according to Hurley, that the 1994 premiere has become such an (unofficial) anniversary that it is recognized and seems to be celebrated annually.
“People call me and say 'Happy Birthday' to this dress. So yes, this dress has birthdays. Until next year.”
