ROSEMEAD, Calif.–( BUSINESS WIRE )– High winds and several dangerous wildfires continue to create life-threatening conditions in parts of Southern California.

Edison International (NYSE:) and Southern California Edison (SCE) extend their thoughts to everyone affected by this devastating event, and offer great gratitude to firefighters, public safety officials and all utility workers who support customers in California.

Since January 7, SCE has restored more than 500,000 customers – more than 90% of the outages” with 62,662 customers currently without power as of 5:30 a.m. on January 12. SCE has submitted two Electrical Safety Incident Reports (ESIR) related to the current wildfires, one of which is for Eaton (NYSE:) One Fire and Another for Hurst Fire. ESIR reports are submitted to the California Commission (CPUC) for incidents that meet certain criteria, such as significant media interest or government investigation. These summary reports contain preliminary information and are submitted within two to four hours after the event occurs. To comply with CPUC requirements, these reports are often sent before SCE can determine whether its electrical facilities are ignition-related.

Eaton fire

On January 9, the SCE submitted an ESIR relating to the Eaton Fire, as the incident may have met reporting requirements, such as significant media attention and property damage in excess of $200,000. In addition, SCE received evidence preservation notices from the attorney representing the insurance companies in connection with the fire. SCE conducted a preliminary circuit information analysis of four power transmission lines in the Eaton Canyon area. This analysis shows that there were no operational/electrical outages or anomalies during the 12 hours prior to the reported fire start time until more than an hour after the reported fire start time. Aside from conservation notices indicating SCE's possible involvement and media attention surrounding the fire, SCE had not filed an ESIR report.

Hurst Fire

On January 10, SCE filed an ESIR related to the Hurst Fire once SCE learned that fire agencies were investigating whether SCE equipment was involved in ignition, a reportable event. SCE noted that the fire was reported at approximately 10:10 p.m. on January 7, and preliminary information reflects that the Eagle Rock – Sylmar 220 kV circuit experienced a relay at 10:11 p.m., and a downed power line was discovered in a tower associated with Eagle . Rock – Sylmar 220 kV circuit. SCE does not know whether the observed damage occurred before or after the fire started.

Wildfire relief efforts

To support communities affected by wildfires, Edison International announced a financial contribution of $1 million to community organizations to support relief efforts and assist those affected by wildfires. The contribution, funded through the Foundation and direct giving, will start at $350,000, including $150,000 to the American Red Cross; Up to $100,000 to match employee contributions to three local nonprofits Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Pasadena Humane, and YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles; and $100,000 to Charities of America to assist employees impacted by the wildfires.

Severe weather continues to be a rapidly evolving condition. While wind conditions have improved, dangerous weather is expected until January 15 in some areas. Safety remains the company's top priority for customers, communities and employees. Some customers may be de-energized this weekend and next week, either due to a public safety power shutoff (PSPS), strong winds, wildfires or other conditions. SCE will restore service as quickly as it is safe to do so. Deactivated PSPS patrol crews found damage indicating that PSPS was indeed valuable in protecting communities during this wind storm.
