A fire has broken out at a power plant in California that houses one of the world's largest battery energy storage facilities.
An official with the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the fire started in a building containing lithium-ion batteries Thursday afternoon.
The Moss Landing Power Plant, operated by Vistra, was evacuated, as were residents of the surrounding area. No injuries were reported.
A Monterey police spokesman said officials were not effectively fighting the fire, instead leaving the building and batteries to burn on the advice of fire experts.
