Vitale has not played a match in two years amid battles with various illnesses, including cancer in his vocal cords.

Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021, then diagnosed with lymphoma months later. He returned in the fall of 2021, but later had to step away to have surgery on his vocal cords.

Vitaly announced in the summer of 2023 that the cancer had spread to his vocal cords, and then to his lymph nodes, causing him to fight four types of cancer in a period of four years.

He underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy and more surgeries over the past two years, before being declared cancer-free earlier this month.

However, after his latest fall, Vitale will have to recover at least one more time before college basketball fans hear him call another game.
