On the same day, President Donald Trump Republicans announced a plan to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “America’s Gulf,” which one of his Republican colleagues took up in an emergency winter weather order Monday.
Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis Issued Executive Order 25-13 In response to a historic 1,500-mile weather system pushing rain and blizzard conditions eastward along the Gulf and the Interstate 10 corridor.
“Whereas a low pressure area moving across America's Gulf, interacting with Arctic air, will bring widespread impact winter weather to North Florida beginning Tuesday, January 21, 2025…” DeSantis' order began.
“…So I, Ron DeSantis…I issue the following executive order effective immediately…” the order continued, setting out an expanded series of actions to be taken by state, local and other authorities.

Ice and snow totals are expected to be “scanty, by northern standards,” according to FOX Weather, but will likely produce “crippling impacts throughout the (affected) region,” which includes Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. .
Depending on location, residents will experience 1 to 5 inches of snow in an area more accustomed to tropical cyclones than white-hot hurricanes.
DeSantis' order appears to have been issued before Trump signed his own executive order to fulfill his earlier pledge.

Trump pointed out that the Gulf extends more than 1,000 miles from South Padre Island in Texas; Curving along Pascagoula, Mississippi; Orange Beach, Alabama; and Pensacola, Florida, all the way to the Florida Strait.
Florida Bay's coastline is the longest of any state – from the famous FloraBama Lounge on Perdido Key extending 775 miles all the way to the “southernmost point in the continental United States” at Key West.
On Monday, Trump ordered the Interior Ministry to take appropriate measures to change the name within 30 days.
His predecessor was also involved in a slew of historic changes – mostly US military bases from Virginia and farther south.
Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia, named after General Robert E. Lee, became Fort Greg Adams. Fort Bragg in North Carolina, named after General Braxton Bragg, became Fort Liberty. Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green, Virginia, named after General Ambrose Powell Hill, became Fort Walker, and Fort Hood in El Paso, Texas, became Fort Cavazos.

These name changes came amid pressure from the political left to post memorials and other reminders of the Confederacy.
And in Trump's caseHe also changed the name of the continent's highest peak — Denali, in Talkeetna, Alaska — to Mount McKinley after fellow Republican President William McKinley — the only rare change that sparked outrage on his side of the aisle.
Trump said in his order that it is in the nation's interest to promote America's heritage and honor the contributions of “visionary and patriotic Americans.”
A representative for DeSantis declined to comment.
