President-elect Donald Trump used social media strategically during his campaign, leveraging audio interviews to influence the election more than celebrity endorsements or legacy liberal media, according to a new report from The Washington Post.

Popular progressive YouTuber and political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen said Democrats need to reach voters in the social media ecosystem or risk losing ground to conservatives.

“Democrats in general are more careful and more intentional about where we choose to go,” Cohen said. He added, “But the truth is that in this media environment, you can reach politicians if you want, but this will not be enough to change the course of the elections.”

“If you're looking to persuade voters, you have to get involved in culture and sports, and we've conceded that to the right,” Cohen continued. “We have to, like, get a lot of that space back, otherwise we won't be able to win.”

“Team Harris ultimately failed to embrace direct/authentic engagement by treating creators as ‘media outlets’ rather than partners,” said political analyst Rachel Janvasa. “The content that the Trump campaign put out on TikTok seemed more cultural than political. And I think that's where one of their strengths was,” she added.

“There seems to be a significant degree of censorship among people on the left, and that has some harmful effects,” Cohen said. “We have a better message. We just have to make sure people hear it at this point, and there has to be more openness on the left to go places that are not necessarily safe, and are not necessarily comfortable.”
