Investing.com — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation by Monday, the Globe and Mail reported Sunday, amid mounting pressure from his party to quit.
The Globe and Mail cited three unnamed sources for the report, indicating that Trudeau's exit would occur before a major Liberal caucus meeting on Wednesday. It was not clear whether Trudeau would remain as prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
Trudeau's potential exit comes amid growing calls from the Liberal Party for his resignation, with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland recently quitting over policy disagreements.
Recent opinion polls show that the Liberal Party is also preparing for a landslide loss to the Conservatives in the elections that will be held by October 2025.
Trudeau's resignation is also expected to increase calls for a snap election, which will choose an administration that will deal with US President Donald Trump for the next four years.
The Globe and Mail report said Trudeau has discussed appointing Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc as interim prime minister, although this would not be possible if LeBlanc also sought Trudeau's leadership of the Liberal Party.
