Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said the team's lack of confidence is what worries him most after Sunday's worrying defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The match marked United's first loss in 2025 after recent promising results against Arsenal and Liverpool in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively. But it forms part of a wider slump that the team has struggled to break all season – just three wins from Ruben Amorim's 11 league games, spanning almost two months, and six defeats over the same period.
Brighton broke the deadlock with a simple ball over the top during the first few minutes at Old Trafford. But while United responded relatively well, dominating the remainder of the first half and earning an equaliser Fernandez Himself converted from the penalty spot, they conceded again straight after the restart and had no further reply. The score ended 3-1 in favor of Brighton.
“We could have stayed in the game at 2-1 (but) we also lacked a little bit of belief in that moment that we could get back into the game and change the game,” Fernandes said. On TV.
“Then you concede to make it 3-1 and everything after that becomes a bit more difficult. We still have time to get back into the game, we still have time to do something different but what worries me more is the lack of confidence that we have at the moment to do the things that We are capable of doing it,” the commander lamented.
“I don't mind anyone losing the ball for trying to do something to try to help the team but we need to get the best out of the players. We need the players to believe in themselves and that they can change things ourselves.”
Brighton coach Fabian Horzler pointed out united Having “world-class” players when he thought about the match then. But that level was not there to be seen. There will be other difficult matches, at home to Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, before traveling to Fulham on Sunday. Then it's an away day in Romania against FCSB, and Crystal Palace is at home.
