The basics of a healthy lifestyle often stick in our minds as accepted truths. When the bathroom scale reveals a higher number, these “truths” tend to surface—jogging in the morning, eating meals at set times, avoiding sweets, and drinking plenty of water. But do all these rules really hold up today?
Bright Side has highlighted 10 healthy lifestyle rules that could use an update:
10. Sleeping for 8 Hours
Research by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine shows that 7 hours of sleep is typically sufficient for most people. This amount lets the body recover and energize effectively, while more sleep isn’t necessarily better.
9. Eating a Big Breakfast
The ideal breakfast size varies by individual needs. Food should be enjoyable, so if you don’t feel hungry in the morning, consider starting with a glass of water instead of forcing a large meal.
8. Jogging in the Morning
Jogging can be beneficial at any time, so don’t feel pressured to run early. In fact, it’s better to wait at least 40 minutes after eating breakfast before any exercise, giving your body time to wake up and preventing potential issues like faintness or an irregular heartbeat.
7. Avoiding Sweets
Some sweets can be good in moderation, as they contain glucose, which supports brain function. Try reducing sugar intake by choosing unsweetened yogurts, drinking unsweetened hot beverages, or opting for dried fruits.
6. Training Until You’re Drained
Contrary to popular belief, soreness doesn’t always mean an effective workout. Extreme soreness often indicates overexertion or even muscle injury. It’s better to work out moderately to avoid injuries and allow for proper recovery.
5. Not Drinking Water During Meals
Water is vital for digestion. Drinking water with meals can aid digestion, as it provides necessary moisture for breaking down food. So, don’t hesitate to drink water with your meal.
4. Having Meals at the Same Time Every Day
Eating when you’re hungry is more important than sticking to a schedule. Allow your body’s hunger signals to guide you, and consider breaking daily intake into 5-6 smaller meals if that suits you.
3. Brushing Teeth After Every Meal
Brushing immediately after acidic meals (e.g., from lemon, pickles, or salad dressings) can damage tooth enamel. Twice-daily brushing—morning and night—remains the best practice for dental health.
2. Cutting Out Bread
Whole-grain bread offers dietary fiber, which helps remove cholesterol and supports digestion. Moderate amounts, around 200 grams daily, can contribute positively to health.
1. Drinking 2 Liters of Water Per Day
The ideal water intake varies per individual, approximately 30ml per kilogram of body weight, adjusted for factors like weather, humidity, and exercise. Hydration can also come from other liquids, such as tea and juice.
