Mbeumo has never played for a top club before, so Arsenal could be a big step for him, but it's hard to ignore how well he has played this season.

There were some comparisons made with Sadio Mane, who was also a bit of a late bloomer, but also looked too good to play for a mid-table team like Southampton before Liverpool eventually snapped him up.

It would be a bit difficult to ask Mbeumo to go to Arsenal and repeat what Mane did with Liverpool, but this appears to be the kind of signing the north Londoners need.

Arsenal's goalscoring woes were clear to all to see last night in that 2-0 loss at home to Newcastle, who were more clinical than the home side in the end, with Alexander Isak scoring against the club he has been strongly linked with in recent months.

Mbeumo may not be in Isaac's league, but he would certainly improve a struggling Arsenal side, and many fans will be hoping they don't let this deal go until the summer.
