The Brazilian government announced on Tuesday that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is in intensive care after brain surgery and is recovering “well.”
The 79-year-old, commonly referred to as Lola, underwent a craniotomy to drain a hematoma in his head after an MRI scan showed “intracranial hemorrhage,” according to a medical note shared by the government. The memorandum stated that the injury was related to a fall at his home on October 19 and that Lula was suffering from a headache.
The memo added that the surgery was “uneventful” and that Lula was being monitored in intensive care.
Lula canceled his attendance at the BRICS summit in Russia last October for health reasons.
The doctors will hold a press conference at 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
