Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. says his son, David Benavidez, will take David Morell into deep water and plunge him into their fight in 29 days on February 1 at the PBC on Prime Video PPV in Las Vegas.
Jose Sr. feels Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) can beat WBA “Regular” light heavyweight champion Morell (11-0, 9 KOs) through body shots and pressure.
Benavidez plan
“We don’t know. Everyone’s style is different,” Jose Benavidez Sr. said. YSM Sports Media When asked if David Morrell is a stronger opponent for David Benavidez than Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade.
“David Morrell is a great fighter, a very decorated amateur fighter, two-time world champion at 168 and 175. He's left-handed. We don't know (if Morrell is stronger than Plant and Andrade), but as of right now, we're training like he's the best fighter of our career.” We have to think about that.
“We can't underestimate David Morrell. We don't know how big his heart is. We're going to take him to deeper water, and we'll see if he can swim. If not, he's going to drown. The plan isn't just to win the fight. It looks amazing,” Benavidez Sr. said. .
Morel is bigger, stronger and much smaller than Plante and Andrade. So, for Jose Sr. to count on Benavidez doing the same thing to him that he did against these fighters, he could be in for a huge disappointment on February 1st.
“It's about all these fighters moving. They don't want to get hit. So, they're very careful. They use their legs a lot,” Jose Sr. said. “I hope David Morrell comes to the fight and shows people that he is the best at 175, and it will end with a knockout.”
Morel doesn't move much. When he moves, he stands in front of his opponents. He doesn't move around the ring, he moves along with his upper body. Morell will be there for Benavidez to exchange shots.
Morell's punches are much harder than the punches the Mexican monster has been fighting during his career and may not last long when the Cuban starts hitting.
Target the body
“If he's careful, using his legs and moving, it's going to take a while because when you have a fighter moving, it makes it a little difficult,” Jose Sr. said. “I'm sure David (Benavidez) will take advantage of that and start breaking this body down and start damaging it.
The shots with which Morell was hitting his last opponent, Radivoj Kalajdzic, on August 3 either knocked out Benavidez or damaged him so badly that he was defenseless against the follow-up barrage. Morell injured Radivoje several times in their fight at BMO Arena in Los Angeles.
“Hopefully we can get him out of there before the ninth or 10th round,” Benavidez Sr. said.
