the Board of Control for Cricket in India The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced that elections will be held for the positions of Secretary and Treasurer on January 12. A Special General Meeting (SGM) will be held in Mumbai to fill these key positions. The positions then became vacant earlier this month Jay Shah Ashish Shelar stepped down.
The BCCI Constitution stipulates that any vacancy must be filled within 45 days. The next SGM meets this requirement because it will be held within 43 days. The state units have already been notified about the meeting, following the recent decision taken by the Supreme Council.
Why are elections held?
Jay Shah, who served as Secretary of BCCI, has been appointed as the bank's youngest president International Cricket Council (International Criminal Court) on December 1. Ashish Shelar resigned after taking oath as a minister in the Maharashtra government.
The Lodha Commission reforms, upheld by the Supreme Court, stipulate that one person cannot hold two offices simultaneously. This rule applies to public employees, ministers and officials in sports administration. As a result, both Shah and Shelar had to vacate their positions at BCCI.
Electoral process and interim arrangements
To ensure a transparent electoral process, former Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti has been appointed as the Election Officer. Jyoti, a retired Gujarat cadre IAS officer, has prior experience of managing crucial elections in India.
Currently, Devajit Saikia from Assam is the interim secretary, while the post of treasurer remains vacant. The elections scheduled for January 12 are expected to be unanimous, with the possibility of consensus among the state federations of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
