MUMBAI (Reuters) – A man believed to be a Bangladeshi national was arrested in India's financial capital Mumbai on Sunday and is considered the prime suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, police said.
Thursday's attack on Khan, one of India's most bankable stars, shocked the country's film industry and Mumbai residents, with many calling for better police and security. Doctors said he was out of danger and left the hospital.
“Preliminary evidence indicates that the accused is a Bangladeshi citizen and after entering India illegally changed his name,” Dixit Gedam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said at a press conference.
Gedam said the suspect, who was arrested on the outskirts of Mumbai, was using the name Vijay Das but was believed to be Muhammad Sharif Islam Shehzad and was working with a housekeeping agency after coming to the city five or six months ago.
He added that the police would request the suspect's detention for further investigation.
Khan (54 years old) was stabbed six times by an intruder during an attempted robbery at his home. Doctors said that he underwent surgery after sustaining stab wounds to his spine, neck and hands.
Police in Mumbai arrested the first main suspect in the attack on Friday, while police in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh arrested a second person on Saturday.
