The third test of Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 between India and Australiais scheduled to unfold in (Gabba in Brisbane).promises to be a high-stakes showdown at series level 1-1. Beyond the competition on the field, the tension between Marnus Labuschagne and David Warner took center stage.
David Warner challenges Marnus Labuschagne's style
Warner raised concerns about Labuschagne's dismissal in the gully, especially during the first innings of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. Speaking to Fox Cricket, Warner expressed doubts about Labuschagne's technical approach, noting that his dismissals were a recurring pattern when he reached the age of 50 or over. Warner's comments indicated a level of doubt regarding Labuschagne's ability to adapt and maintain consistency at the highest level.
“I'm still not convinced on Marnus. I don't think that was close to what we know he's capable of. He might have gotten a couple up the middle, got a couple of freebies, and hit well that night to get through but they threw the ball poorly. “From That perspective, he had the best conditions to go out and bat. But he went out the same way he always goes out over 50, hitting straight into the groove.” Warner said.
Labuschagne defends with confidence and facts
Labuschagne wasted no time in responding to Warner's criticism, emphasizing his composure and statistical support. In an interview with News Corp, Labuschagne responded: “I'd like to see him check how many times I've been caught in the gully, because obviously I get out there every week.”
Labuschagne noted that he had only been sacked from the gully twice in his career, challenging the validity of Warner's criticism. He further clarified that his dismissal in Adelaide was the result of an unusual slide, rather than a technical glitch that needed immediate correction.
“I look back and I think I can only remember getting stuck in the gully twice. So I might have to look at Paul (Warner)'s comment there. But like I said, everyone's here to write newspapers and write articles.” Labuschagne concluded, casting doubt on Warner's assessment.

The pivotal role played by Labuschagne in the Gabba
Despite the criticism, Labuschagne's gallant 64-run success off 126 deliveries during the second Test was a crucial anchor to Australia's innings. His role as a steady presence at number three has become more important as Australia head into the crucial third Test at the Gabba. The Gabba, famous for its speed-friendly conditions, will put Labuschagne's technique under the microscope once again. With the series tied at 1-1, Labuschagne will look to build on his innings in Adelaide and prove his critics wrong by producing a match-defining performance in Brisbane.
The Gabba's difficult conditions – offering help to the bowlers – will once again test Labuschagne's game, especially against seamers like Muhammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. His ability to perform under these conditions could determine Australia's chances of getting the upper hand in this hotly contested series.
