Liverpool certainly need to keep hold of the 33-year-old, who remains one of the best defenders in the world, but this is another huge saga that only seems to keep going.

In addition to Van Dijk, Liverpool are also eyeing Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to become free agents in a few months' time.
It would be an absolute disaster for the Reds to lose these three big names for nothing, and it is absolutely baffling that the club has allowed the situation to get to this point.
