Anthony Hopkins hits the milestone of 49 years of sobriety

Anthony Hopkins He ends the year by celebrating a major milestone in his sobriety journey.

“Good morning! Happy December 29th. 29th? Why 29th? Well, on this day 49 years ago, I stopped (drinking),” the 86-year-old actor said while making a hand gesture to drink on Sunday, December 29th. Instagram video. “I was having a lot of fun, but then I realized I was in really big trouble because I couldn't remember anything and I was driving drunk out of my skull.”

Hopkins admitted that in that “fatal” moment he realized that he “needed help” and sought it.

“I called a group of people like me — alcoholics — and that was it,” he continued sober. “I’ve had more fun during these 49 years than I ever have before.”

In the clip, Hopkins sits in front of a lit fireplace and the mantle is decorated with holiday wreaths. He encouraged those who find themselves in a similar situation to seek support.

“If you have a problem — having fun is great, having a drink is good — but if you have a problem with booze, there is help,” Hopkins said. “It's not a terrible deal. It's a condition. If you're allergic to alcohol, get some help. There's plenty of help around.”

Hopkins admitted this when he first started his business Sobriety journeyHe did not know that there were others in similar situations.

“There's one thing I didn't realize: I wasn't unique,” he admitted. “There are thousands of people like me.”

And while Hopkins has come a long way since then, he shared that his sobriety has made his life better — and there's a lot to look forward to.
