Anna kendrick made a name for herself by starring in a series of classic films such as pitch perfect and Scott Pilgrim vs. the world. Given her cute girl-next-door quality, it was difficult for some moviegoers to realize how talented she really was. As it turns out, Kendrick is just as skilled behind the camera as she is in front of it, and now you can watch her stunning directorial debut Woman of the hour On Netflix.

A terrifying true story

Anna Kendrick's debut film focuses on the horrific case of Rodney Alcala, a real-life serial killer who still has time to appear on screen. Dating game In 1978 while he was in the midst of the gruesome killings. In an interesting cinematic choice, Woman of the hour The film is divided between a recounting of Alcala's bloody and accidental adventures and the more straightforward story of an aspiring actress who believes that participating in a national game show will improve her career prospects. Unfortunately, this puts her on a collision course with Alcala, a racer whose increasing body count proves that everyone in her path is a potential target.

As you might expect, Anna Kendrick She stars in her own film, playing a wannabe actress whose career ambitions bring her face to face with the killer, ably played by Daniel Zovatto (a horror veteran who has starred in modern classics like He follows and The Pope's exorcist). The game show host is played by Tony Hale, who is still known for his comedic roles Arrested development and Vice President. Other top artists in Woman of the hour Includes Nicolette Robinson, Pete Holmes and Kelly Jackley.

It's a shame that Anna Kendrick's directorial debut never made it to theaters (it's a great movie). Netflix Exclusive), which means there is no actual box office for it. We say “sadly” because the critics who impressed Kendrick would certainly have liked to see this film on the big screen. on Rotten tomatoes, Woman of the hour It received a critical score of 91 percent, with critics generally praising how the film creates a stunningly modern examination of the misogyny and violence rooted in past tragedies.

Aside from its impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, why do we think you should see Anna Kendrick's first film? As a director, she manages to deliver some real chills that will stick with you long after the credits roll. The fact that she manages to do this in this crowded true-crime genre is, frankly, even more impressive, and her film (unlike many films in this genre) never tries to sensationalize the real killer at its center.

Woman of the hour It also cleverly uses the narrative framework as a way to analyze how serial killer violence and misogyny are linked in ways we're still trying to figure out to this day. It's an important message that viewers need to understand, but Anna Kendrick never comes off as a preachy or moralizing director. Instead, it presents today's horrors through the lens of yesterday in a confident way that nonetheless leaves us terrified of what tomorrow may hold.

If we're being honest, we're still mostly amazed by the fact that Anna Kendrick, already one of Hollywood's most trusted talents, is equally skilled as a director. You will like it Woman of the hour As we were when you broadcast it On Netflix? You'll never know until you discover the perfect direction for yourself.
