Washington – Former President Jimmy Carter He will be remembered for his kind spirit, faith and humanitarian efforts, viewers standing outside his funeral at the National Cathedral told Fox News Digital.
Carter died on December 29 at the age of 100, the only US president to reach the century mark. Several memorials to the 39th President have been erected, both in D.C. and in Georgia, since his death.
Continuing a long-standing tradition, a memorial service for Carter was held at the Washington National Cathedral In Washington, DCon Thursday, as Fox New Digital spoke to people gathered outside the funeral about the late president's lasting legacy.
One woman recalled meeting Carter when she was just 7 years old, telling Fox News Digital that the fun interaction sparked her lifelong love of politics.
Jimmy Carter was a man of faith, and this is how he should be remembered
“My mother was a delegate to the 76th Arkansas state convention. He came to Arkansas to campaign, and I met him. I remember he was very nice,” she told Fox News Digital.
“I think that was the beginning of my love for politics and I know he's a really good guy. So we wanted to walk in and see if we could pay our respects,” she said.
The woman's husband also thought about Carter's legacy.
“What I find interesting about President Carter is that he had a very short political career, right. So no more than 8 to 10 years. But his legacy for life was all of the humanitarian efforts that he made to help others. He gave it to me,” another person told Fox. “No one is a stranger.” “I want to have a life that somewhat mirrors the life he had, really just supporting people and being there for them and making sure everyone feels like they are a part and no one else is.”
President Biden declared Thursday a national day of mourning, meaning many Americans took time off work. Many spent the morning waiting outside the memorial to pay their respects.
“I grew up when he was president, I was basically a kid,” one viewer told Fox. “But I also followed him over the years in all the work he did with the homeless and building homes.” “I had Some good friends in Wisconsin Who were part of his church. So I thought I would, on my day off, take a walk around and see if I could see anything.”
The Washington, D.C., resident told Fox that although he did not experience Carter as president, he followed his work during his post-presidential years.
“I think he was definitely a president before my lifetime. But I think I always heard a lot about his work after the presidency and kind of what he did after that. I think that was something that was really meaningful only with Habitat for Humanity and things like that. I think that's the thing that “I will generally remember him by that.”
After the memorial in DC, Carter will be transported back to his home state of Georgia, where he will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, to whom he has been married for 77 years.
