Mumbai pacer Aayush Mhatre etched his name in the history books on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player to score more than 150 runs in List A cricket. The 17-year-old prodigy accomplished the feat during a Vijay Hazare Award clash against Nagaland, surpassing the previous record set by the Indian batsman Yashavi Jaiswal.
At just 17 years and 168 days, Mhatre has surpassed Jaiswal's mark of 17 years and 291 days. Back in 2019, Jaiswal set the record while playing for Mumbai against Jharkhand. Mhatre's blistering 181 off just 117 balls included 15 fours and 11 towering balls, pushing Mumbai to a fearsome total of 403 balls for seven in 50 overs.
A rising star from Ferrar
Born and raised in the Mumbai suburb of Virar, Mhatre has been a revelation since making his debut for the local giants earlier this season. His consistent performances across formats have made him a mainstay of the team.
He was part of Mumbai's Iran Cup-winning side that ended a 27-year drought by beating Rest of India in October. In his Ranji Trophy debut, Mhatre showed his potential with 52 off 71 dead-balls, despite Mumbai falling short against Baroda in the opener.
Building momentum in domestic cricket
Mhatre's season has been a mixture of brilliance and resilience. After his debut, he played a match-winning 176 against Maharashtra, an innings filled with 22 fours and four sixes. Mumbai registered a nine-wicket win thanks to his heroics.
Although he had quieter outings against Tripura and Odisha, Mhatre rebounded with a second first-class century against Services, scoring 116 runs off 149 balls. This knock cemented his status as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket.
Shine on the international scene
Mhatre's form earned him a place in the India Under-19 squad Asia Cup. He contributed fifties against Japan and UAE before failing in the final as India lost to Bangladesh. His performances showed his ability to handle pressure on the international stage.
After he missed Mumbai Syed Mushtaq Ali Award After winning the title, Mhatre returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy in style. He smashed a fluent 78 in a high-scoring encounter against Karnataka, further underscoring his abilities in the 50-over format.
