Most first-time directors don't start out with a blockbuster that makes twice its budget and then becomes a huge hit, but then again, most first-time directors aren't Zoë Kravitz. The actress wrote and directed the thriller Blink twicewhich debuted in theaters last year and stunned audiences by turning Channing Tatum into a villain. The hunk's typical “Aw Shucks” persona has been replaced by his villainous role as the no-good tech mogul.
Billionaire private islands never end well
Blink twice It centers around Frida (played by Naomi Ackie, star of the upcoming film). Mickey 17), a waitress lured to spend a weekend at the private island of billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum), who is of course incredibly handsome and charming, but there is depravity beneath the carefully crafted facade, unlike any other role in Tatum's filmography. Professional life. The duo is joined by Slater's friends, including Tom (Haley Joel Osment), Cody (Simon Rex), and Stan (Christian Slater), and a few other women, including Frida's friend, Jess (Alia Shawkat of Final girls), and Sarah is a reality TV star (Good news Adria Arjona). What begins with scenes of partying, drinking and lounging by the pool soon takes a dark turn.
One morning, Frieda realizes that Jess is gone, and no one else on the island seems to remember that she was ever there. Although it plays with familiar horror tropes, the film's eerie atmosphere lulls even viewers into a state of terror trance Before all hell breaks loose. Blink twice It's slow in revealing what happens to the island guests, but once the third act begins, it builds towards the end.
Future cult classic
In interviews, Zoe Kravitz She explained that she started working on the first draft of the film in 2017 and that it had been her passion for years. Blink twice Her vision has been brought to life, and although there are a few missteps, as far as the film goes with its plot, it still feels like it's dragging its feet. None of the characters ever feel completely fleshed out, and each can be summed up in a few words, but whether that's a good or bad thing is entirely subjective and depends on how you like horror.
What Kravitz has succeeded in doing is what most horror filmmakers try to do, which is take the anxiety of their era and present it through the lens of a horror story that turns fear and anxiety into something tangible. Blink twice It succeeds by embracing different levels of very real fears in society today and tilting them slightly to produce a future cult classic. So far, the film, which has grossed double its $20 million production budget in theaters, has achieved the rare feat of convincing critics and audiences to agree on the film. Rotten tomatoes75% and 71% fresh, respectively.
Blink twice It won't gain any fans for being original, and it may be too entrenched in current societal trends to remain relevant, although sadly it will probably stick around for a very long time, but there are plenty of horror films released every year that are worse. Much. Zoe Kravitz has proven she has talent behind the camera, and hopefully she'll start working on another film soon. As for Channing Tatumhe's gone from being typecast to proving he can act in many different roles, so he might surprise everyone once again.
