A shark attack off Egypt's Red Sea coast killed one tourist and injured another, officials said.
The Egyptian Ministry of Environment said in a statement that the accident occurred north of Marsa Alam, a resort located in eastern Egypt and popular with divers.
She added that the attack occurred in “deep water outside the designated swimming area.”
While the ministry only said that the two victims were foreigners, the Agence France-Presse reported that they were Italian citizens, citing an unnamed source in the Italian Foreign Ministry.
The deceased man was 48 years old, a resident of Rome, while the injured man was 69 years old, according to Agence France-Presse.
Egyptian officials said the tourists were taken to a hospital in Port Ghalib, about 30 miles north of Marsa Alam.
The authorities said that the swimming area in Marsa Alam will be closed and the incident is being investigated.
In the past 10 years, there have been four confirmed deaths due to shark attacks, according to data compiled by the independent Shark Research Institute.
The last incident occurred in June 2023 near Hurghada, and involved a 24-year-old Russian man.
