Taliban Refugee Minister Khalil Haqqani was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul, the movement's highest-profile casualty since its return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
Interior Ministry sources said six others were killed in the explosion while Haqqani was leaving his office.
Khalil Haqqani was a senior member of a powerful Taliban faction called the Haqqani Network, and the United States has designated him a global terrorist.
No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which the Taliban accused ISIS militants of carrying out.
Khalil Haqqani's brother, Jalaluddin, was a famous guerrilla leader who fought Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s and founded the Haqqani network, which was behind many attacks during the 20-year Taliban insurgency.
Sirajuddin Haqqani, the minister's nephew and son of Jalaluddin, is the current interior minister in the Taliban government.
While the overall security situation in Afghanistan has improved since the Taliban took full control with the complete withdrawal of foreign forces in 2021, there are still dozens of bombings and suicide attacks in the country every year.
Many have claimed Islamic State of KhorasanOr ISKP, the regional branch of the so-called Islamic State, the Taliban's main rival.
