The British Defense Secretary warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that “we will not shy away from taking strong action” after he told Parliament that a Russian spy ship was operating in British waters this week.
John Healy said the Russian spy ship, the Yantar, was tracked in the English Channel by a warship after loitering over vital undersea infrastructure.
A Royal Navy Healey said the submarine had surfaced near Yantar to warn that its every movement had been monitored.
“My message to President Putin is clear,” Healey told lawmakers in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
He added: “We know what you are doing and we will not be shy about taking strong action to protect Britain.”
He added: “We will continue to expose Putin's malicious activities by suppressing the Russian shadow fleet.”
