A Capitol Heights, MarylandA man has been arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, then tried to hide her body in a “makeshift grave” inside his home, police said.

the Prince George Police Department 30-year-old Devontae Gray has been charged with first-degree murder and other related charges in connection with the death of 29-year-old Alexis Shuler of Washington, D.C., he said in a news release.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department contacted police in Prince George's County on Jan. 18, for assistance in a missing persons case involving Schuler, who had been reported missing earlier in the week.

On Saturday, the Prince George Police Department executed a search warrant for Gray's home as part of the investigation.

While inside Gray's home, investigators found what were believed to be Schuler's remains, after Gray made “extensive efforts” to hide her body, police said.

Gray was arrested at the scene and allegedly confessed to killing Schuler, police said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Schuler was shot, police said Tuesday.

Fox 5 DC She obtained charging documents in the case, which say Gray was seen on surveillance video going in and out of his home with construction materials while wearing a full-body construction suit with gloves, between Jan. 12 and 13.

The materials shown in the video appear to include cement, rocks, cinder blocks, plastic bags and large black storage containers.

When authorities conducted a welfare check at Gray's home on January 14, they reported a “strange” odor upon entering the home but believed the filthy conditions of the residence were to blame.

Charging documents also indicated that when investigators returned to the home on Jan. 19 to execute a search warrant, they found a semi-automatic handgun inside, as well as new drywall, acetone, lemon ammonia and other cleaning and building materials in the home. .

With the help of members of the Prince George's County Fire Department, the drywall was removed and a “makeshift grave” was discovered under the stairs, charging documents showed.

Police said that a box at the scene was opened, and inside it was a human foot believed to belong to Schuler.

Gray has been charged First degree murder and other related charges and remains in custody.
