Ipswich recorded their first home win of the season in the Premier League in the 10th time when they beat Chelsea at Portman Road.

Liam Delap won a first-half penalty and converted before Omari Hutchinson – who began his career with the Blues – scored the second.

Chelsea had chances, as Cole Palmer twice hit the woodwork and Joao Felix had a goal disallowed for offside.

But Enzo Maresca's side were unable to find a way past Christian Walton on his return to the Ipswich goal and missed the chance to finish second in the table.

It is now just one point from three games for Chelsea as they stumble over the festive period and remain in fourth place.

Ipswich climb above Leicester but remain in the relegation zone in 18th place – but they are now just one point behind Wolves and two behind Everton.

Delap has been a shining light for Ipswich this season and did remarkably well to get to a pass inside the area ahead of Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen – although the contact appeared slight.

The striker buried the penalty, the first penalty Ipswich have scored in the top flight since November 2001.

Palmer saw a free-kick hit the post and Walton had a shot hit the crossbar before Felix put in a good cross. However, the Portuguese was offside.

Ipswich stole a second goal on the break after Axel Disasi lost the ball, and Delap picked it up and passed it to Hutchinson to score a smart own goal.

Chelsea finished the night with 20 shots but failed to score in two consecutive away league matches for the first time in more than five years.
