A California woman He faces charges after 27 dead horses were found at multiple properties outside Sacramento, police say.
The discoveries were made in Clements while law enforcement executed search warrants in connection with an “ongoing” operation. Investigating animal neglect The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office announced late Wednesday.
“During the operation, several malnourished horses were discovered in the building with difficulty accessing any food or water, and approximately 27 horses were found dead,” she added.
“Our animal services officers, along with veterinarians who were at the scene, immediately began triaging and assessing the condition of the horses,” police added. “After comprehensive assessments, 16 horses were rescued and are now in the care of specialists at Oakdale Equine Rescue who will ensure they receive proper nutrition, medical care and rehabilitation.
Police also said: “Unfortunately, four horses and one bull had to be euthanized due to extreme neglect.”
Jan Johnson of Clements was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.
