A teacher and a teenage student have been identified as the victims killed in a school shooting in Wisconsin.

Erin West, 42, and Robbie Vergara, 14, were shot and killed Monday morning at a private Christian school in Madison.

They were pronounced dead at the scene, the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the suspect, Natalie Robinau, 15, opened fire on schoolmates and staff before turning the gun on herself.

A statement has been published At a local funeral home Ruby described Vergara as a freshman who left behind her parents, her brother, and a large extended family.

“She was an avid reader, loved art, singing and playing keyboard in the family worship band. She had a special bond with her beloved pets, Ginger (a cat) and Coco (a dog).”

West was working as a substitute teaching coordinator, the school's director of communications, Barbara Wears, said in a statement to The Associated Press.

“Our hearts are heavy with these losses,” she said.

Angel Propp, a seventh-grader who was at the school during the shooting, told CNN he knew West well, describing her as “kind and caring.”

Rubino, who died from a gunshot wound, had two handguns but police say they do not know how she obtained them and have not said who bought them.

No decisions have been made on whether Robinau's parents could be charged in connection with the shooting.

Madison Police Chief Shawn Barnes said Tuesday that finding Robinau's motive is a top priority.

“But at the moment it appears the motive was a combination of factors,” he told reporters.

In a separate development on Wednesday, police in California issued an armed violence restraining order against a 20-year-old man who they say had been in contact with Robinau.

He was planning to attack a government building, according to court documents, and shared his plan with the 15-year-old in Wisconsin.

The other two students who were shot on Monday remain in critical condition while four others sustained minor injuries.
