Vassinova recalled thinking she had the flu when she visited an urgent care facility in downtown Los Angeles.
“They decided it was bacteria and sent me home with some antibiotics. But the next day, I could barely walk. My legs wouldn’t move. It was weird,” she said.
By the time Vassinova's uncle took her to the emergency room at 2 a.m., she felt like she was “going to die.” Her heart stopped beating for three full minutes. The ER nurse made repeated attempts to resuscitate her, eventually finding a pulse. Vassinova was then placed in an induced coma.
“I had complete organ failure,” she explained. “I went from being a healthy young man to suddenly having this infection take over my entire body. It just showed up, and it rocked my world.”
Surviving a near-death experience made Vassinova feel “more connected” to life.
“It's hard to even describe how I feel,” she said. “I felt like this was the turning point in my life. Dying, being reborn. I know I don't take anything for granted. Life is so precious and it's a gift. We're here to do some good in the world, to be of service, and to be eternally grateful.”
Vassinova had the opportunity to directly thank the emergency nurse who successfully resuscitated her.
“I found out her name was Ruby, so I came back to the hospital with a bracelet with a little ruby just to say, ‘Thank you for saving my life,'” she said. “I didn't know if she was going to recognize me, but when she opened the door, I started crying, and I just lost it. She told me that she never knows who's going to live or die after they're taken away. She just gave me the biggest hug. Because I had been gone for three whole minutes.” “But I'm back.”
