A Georgia Court of Appeals Fulton County District Attorney Fannie Willis was removed Thursday from overseeing the president-elect's criminal election interference trial. Donald Trump And other defendants.

But the appeals court left the indictment against defendants charged with crimes related to their efforts to overturn Trump's loss in Georgia's 2020 presidential election. Joe Biden.

The ruling paves the way for the resumption of proceedings in the criminal case, and a possible trial for defendants other than Trump. The president-elect is not expected to stand trial during his term in the White House, but he may face trial after that term ends.

The decision overturns a Fulton County District Court judge's ruling that allowed Willis to remain in the case despite arguments from Trump's lawyers that she should be disqualified because of the inappropriateness of her romantic relationship with her chosen prosecutor.

In its decision, the Court of Appeal said the trial judge's remedy – which allowed Willis to remain in the case if the prosecutor withdrew from handling it – was inappropriate.

The Court of Appeal said: “But we affirm the rejection of the appellants’ request to dismiss the indictment.”

The Georgia case is one of two criminal cases still pending against Trump.
