One travel trend is that hotel guests are taking their rewards earnings to the next level.

This fad, called “mattress running,” has people booking hotel rooms in order to earn free nights or accumulate status points.

However, it appears that these travelers have not completed their stay but are still booking rooms in the hope of receiving rewards, a move that may backfire, according to the terms and conditions of some hotels listed online.

One curious traveler took to Reddit and posted in the “r/Hyatt” Reddit forum to see if guests needed to be physically present to receive the credit.

The user asked: “Hyatt Mattress Run – Has anyone ever been penalized for running a mattress through digital check-in and never showing up? Does this work?”

“Yes, they didn't give me stay credit and charged me the cash rate. It was very hit or miss,” one user commented.

Another added: “I booked the Hyatt…and checked in online. Although I got a message 'Please check in at reception as we are having an issue with the hotel.' Digital key“.'”

“I was able to check online this morning. This was just a one-day test – and it seems to have worked. I'll see if I get the qualifying night credit or not,” the user concluded.

Another commented: “I saw someone here offering to do ghost/marriage tours in his (or her) hometown. Interesting idea.”

The user continued, explaining: “He/she livedn nashville He was willing to check in/stay at the Hyatt so people could get the mattress operation done. Sounds like a win/win to me.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to Hyatt for comment.

On Hyatt's website, it says the Hyatt app can “manage your stay on the go, from booking to check-in and check-out.”

Another Hyatt website specifically for World of Hyatt members says, “(Member) must physically check in and complete a stay for qualifying H&H night(s) (homes and hideaways) to earn points and receive a qualifying night for the Credit level.”

“No Points will be awarded for any non-refundable prepaid fees, cancellation fees, or no-show fees paid by a Member for a reservation that they did not actually use. In some cases (such as no-shows and lateness) (in the event of cancellations), the Member may be removed Points and qualifying night credits from the member’s account,” Hyatt’s website continues.

Hilton's website includes information about guests who are “no shows” regarding points attainment.

Alston Causey, vice president of Travelimation, a US-based travel agency, told Fox News Digital that people love hotel points and prestige, but achieving them shouldn't be done by cheating the system.
