He became only the second Argentine player to receive the award, after Erik Lamela, who won it in 2021 for his memorable rabona goal for Tottenham in the north London derby against Arsenal.

Garnacho's stunning goal came in the third minute of United's 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park and, unsurprisingly, secured Manchester United and the Premier League's goal of the season for the 2023-24 season.

His goal has now been officially recognized as the world's best goal between August 2023 and August 2024.

The announcement was made by football legend Alessandro Del Piero during the FIFA Best Football Awards held in Doha, Qatar.

Garnacho beat out high-profile rivals, including West Ham's Mohamed Kuddus, Aston Villa's Jaden Villogen (for a goal scored while on loan at Hull City), and Inter Milan's Federico DeMarco.

A Manchester United statement said: “Congratulations to Alejandro Garnacho, winner of the 2024 FIFA Puskas Award.

“The Manchester United winger was honored with the stunning, acrobatic penalty he scored against Everton in November 2023.

“Well done to No. 17, and thanks to everyone who supported him. It's a goal we will cherish for years to come.”

The Puskas Award voting process involved fans as well as a panel of FIFA Legends, ensuring Jarnacho's goal received the endorsement of some of football's most iconic figures.

The win also puts Garnacho alongside his idol Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the first ever winner of the Puskas Award in 2009.

Ronaldo earned the honor with his powerful long-range goal against FC Porto during the Champions League quarter-finals in the 2008-09 season.

Garnacho now becomes the second Manchester United player to win the award.
