Romantic comedies were a mainstay of theatres, and there's a lot of blame to be placed on how they've now become a kind of life support, but I put the blame squarely at the feet of Love indeed. At one time, it was considered the greatest rom-com ever made and one of the best romantic movies ever made, but now it's rightfully categorized as a terrible movie with terrible messages about terrible people doing terrible things to each other. But every year, with the same kind of grim inevitability as Mariah Carey's “All I Want for Christmas,” the film makes the top ten.
Love in reality will not be made today
There are ten distinct stories throughout Love indeedAdmittedly, a few of them are rather cute and likeable, starting with the down-on-his-luck musician, Mac (Bill Nighy), who suddenly has a hit song again and chooses to spend Christmas with his manager, Joe, instead. It's short, simple, and about friendship. If the film had more stories like this one or that of John (Martin Freeman) and Judy (Joanna Page), which capture the awkwardness of transitioning into a new relationship, it would be a classic for all the right reasons, but instead, there are two stories that pull it off It's all down to the mud.
Juliet (18-year-old Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are newly married when it comes to Mark (Andrew Lincoln) He falls in love with his friend's new wife. Mark, admittedly, is great with the printed cards and the streaming box, but in any other movie, he'd be the villain, or Peter would turn out to be abusive instead of here, where he's shown to be a loving and caring husband. Love indeed She manages to go so far as to ask Juliette to give Mark a kiss after his confession, so while she's not kissing him or leaving her husband, she's still kissing her new husband's best friend instead of telling him to get off her lawn.
Mark's confession has been considered a sweet, romantic moment for dozens of Hollywood montages, but although it seems disingenuous, it's not as problematic as the more famous story in… Love indeed. Hugh Grant plays David, the Prime Minister of England, who hosts the American President Billy Bob ThorntonWhen the boss makes lewd comments about Natalie, a British employee. It gets worse when Natalie tells David she loves him, and they actually give in and share a kiss despite the obvious issue of their boss getting involved with one of his employees.
That's just four of the 10 stories, which also include a brief experience fit for any romantic comedy, in which a British man realizes he's a strange foreigner to women in America and ends up coming home from a bar with women playing him. January Jones and Elissa Cuthbert for their roommate, Shannon Elizabeth, and a beautiful story about a father and son discovering love. After watching Harry Potterone Love indeed The cheating story is fun on one level, and one level only, because it involves Alan Rickman cheating on Emma Thompson, so try to imagine it as Professor Snape cheating on Professor Trelawney.
Love actually misses the point
There is an argument to be made for its purpose Love indeed I wasn't supposed to feel happy Romantic comedy Instead, it is a way of showing the chaos inherent in all relationships. On this level, it's a total miss, since the epilogue shows David, once again the Prime Minister of England, kissing his younger employee, and Peter, Mark, and Juliet all show up at the airport waiting for a friend, meaning that no one told Peter what happened. Normally, I try not to spoil anything, but we're only on this planet for a limited amount of time, and strictly speaking, none of that should be spent watching this movie.
Love indeed It killed the romantic comedy and somehow convinced director Garry Marshall, who had nothing to do with the film, that money could be made from the format, but it has been applied to other holidays, giving us… Valentine's Day In 2010, New Year's Eve In 2011, W Mother's Day In 2016. There are better options out there, though I'll admit that New Year's Eve It's probably the best of the bunch, and as with most rom-coms, there are still parts that don't hold up, but nothing as bad as the 2003 film.
If you want to watch Love indeed To see how bad the movie really is and how terrible most of the characters are, you can find it Amazon Primewhere it has been in the top 10 for a few days now. Instead, it would be helpful to stream a better Christmas movie, e.g Christmas with cranks or Four ChristmasesAnd both are better than Love indeed.
