Mumbai and India National Cricket Team batsman Shreyas Iyer has made a big statement about fellow batsman Prithvi Shaw. He described the young player as a godsend but claimed the right-hander needs to improve his work ethic and there will be no problem. Stop it.

Team India youngster Prithvi Shaw is facing a huge downturn in his career. From being touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket to struggling for a place even in the domestic team, his downfall has been extremely painful.

Prithvi Shaw struggled terribly in the domestic season this year

In this year's domestic season, Shaw struggled terribly. He played four matches in the Ranji Trophy and managed just 59 innings before he was dropped from the team based on fitness as well as disciplinary issues. But then he returned to the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Mumbai.

However, it was not a fruitful outing for him there either. Shaw was arguably Mumbai's worst performer in their title-winning campaign. In the entire tournament, he amassed 197 runs at an average of 21.88, with the best of 49, which came against Vidarbha in the quarter-finals.

He just needs to improve his work ethic – Shreyas Iyer on Prithvi Show

Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer praised Prithvi Shaw, calling him the most talented player. While stressing the need for the young batsman to correct his work ethic, he said the sky is the limit. The senior batsman also added that the opening batsman needs to figure things out for himself as he has played a lot of cricket. He explained (as quoted by Cricbuzz):

“I personally think he's a God-gifted player. The amount of talent he has as an individual, no one else has. That's true. He just needs to improve his work ethic. And I've said it well before in many interviews, he needs to improve his work ethic.”

“And if he does that, you know, the sky's the limit for him. Can you force him to do that? I can't force him. He's played a lot of cricket. Everyone has given him input. At the end of the day on the day, his job is to go out there and find out matters on his own.”

No one can force him to do anything – Shreyas Iyer on Prithvi Show

While highlighting that no one can teach Prithvi Shaw what to do, Shreyas Iyer said the batsman needs to focus, put his thinking cap on and figure things out for him. He explained:

“We can't take care of anyone, right? Every professional who plays at this level, needs to know what to do. He has done it too in the past. It's not that he hasn't done it, it's that he has to do it.” He has to sit back and put on his thinking cap and then figure it out for himself, and no one can force him to do anything.
