Veteran Gabe Rosado says David Morell will need to “set traps” for him to hurt size player David Benavidez in their fight in 48 Days on February 1 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Rosado doesn't believe Morel (11-0, 9 KOs) can match the high production of Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) and could be knocked out by burying him with size.
Many fans see Benavidez as too experienced for Morel, and his volume makes him a nightmare. However, Cuban Morel's strength, movement and boxing skills give him a huge advantage. After one fight at 175, Morel seems a better fit for the division than Benavidez.
Morell will put his WBA “regular” light heavyweight title on the line against interim WBC champion Benavidez in their headline show on PBC on Prime Video PPV. The winner of this fight will be able to compete for the undisputed championship at No. 175.
Rosado forecast
“David Morrell vs. David Benavidez. “I prefer Benavidez, but you can't sleep on Morel,” Gabe Rosado said. Combat Center TV About the February 1st match between these two fighters. “Benavidez didn't have to make this fight. It was Morel who needed this fight.
“Morrell has kind of hit the jackpot. So, if he can win this fight, he's in, because no one's really called out Morel. So, that kind of shows what kind of dog Benavidez is. It's like, well, Whatever. Let's run it.
“No one acts that way with Benavidez,” Rosado said of Morell talking about Benavidez during their confrontation. “It's going to be a gun fight. They're both going to clash. It's going to be a matter of who can take it because they're both going to be shooting.”
This is a great fight for Morrell to prove himself against a man who many fans feel is a future star. Benavidez has handicapped himself over the past 11 years, choosing to fight at 168 rather than moving up to 175, where he has more opportunities to put on interesting fights. If he had moved up to light heavyweight in 2014, his career would have been longer. Benavidez foolishly thought Canelo Alvarez would eventually fight him, and waited 10 years. What a mistake.
“I think Muriel is the bigger player of the two, but Benavidez takes the size out of you,” Rosado said. “So what's going to win? Is it going to be strength or is it going to be size? That's what's going to happen because I don't think Morel will be able to match Benavidez's size.
There's no guessing who is the bigger player between Morel and Benavidez. It's clearly Morel. Could Benavidez be a bigger player if he didn't focus on hitting size? Maybe, but he prefers to throw punches in combinations rather than load them up.
Strategy: Traps
“He's constantly punching you. He doesn't get tired. So Muriel's going to have to set up traps to shoot in that fight,” Rosado said.
Benavidez is getting tired. We saw that in his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. He was tired after six rounds and took several hard punches from Gvozdyk in the second half of the contest.
