Manchester United scored two late goals to defeat rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

It was another miserable night for the Premier League champions, who took the lead at half-time.

Jusko Gvardiol rose to the highest level to head home Kevin De Bruyne's cross in what had been a difficult match up to that point.

The quality didn't improve much but United were keen to make it interesting late on.

Amad Diallo latched on to Matheus Nunes's loose pass to goalkeeper Ederson, with the Portugal international catching him as he tried to make up for his mistake.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up to calmly score the resulting penalty, and it was hysterical a few moments later.

Diallo was again at the heart of the action, chipping the ball over Ederson and sliding home to give United a surprise three points.

How did that happen?

City dominated the first match, and had the lion's share of possession.

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Gvardiol rose high to score with his head after a cross from De Bruyne that changed its direction.

The lead was deserved for City, who were the more dangerous team in a tense first half.

Despite City's dominance, neither team created many clear-cut chances, with United failing to register a single shot on target before half-time.

The second half began with City controlling the course of the game, but they failed to capitalize on their control.

Erling Haaland came close to scoring, but the visitors remained in contention, buoyed by City's inability to finish the game off.

As time ticked by, United got into the game and started asking questions about City's defence.

The turning point came in the 86th minute when a blunder by Nunes gave United a lifeline.

Nunes' back pass allowed Amad to pounce, and although his initial touch sent him wide, the midfielder's tackle saw the United winger go down.

Referee Michael Oliver did not hesitate to award the penalty kick. Captain Fernandes stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, leveling the score at 1-1.

With momentum on their side, United sensed an opportunity for an unexpected victory.

Just four minutes later, in stoppage time, Lisandro Martinez sent a perfect pass over the City backline.

Imad showed great composure when he passed the ball past the onrushing Ederson before shooting it into the net despite Gvardiol's pressure.

The away fans exploded as United took a stunning 2-1 lead.

The win lifts United's spirits and provides a major boost to Ruben Amorim's side as they look to bounce back from a run of inconsistent performances.

Meanwhile, City will be left to rue missed opportunities and continue with just one win in 11 matches.
