Jaime Munguia's decision to fight four times in 2024 may have cost him his sixth-round knockout loss to Bruno Surace last Saturday night at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. This was a perfect example of a cherry picking mistake.
Overconfidence
Former super middleweight world title challenger Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) become greedy, He opted to take a fourth fight this year, and the unranked and little-known Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) took advantage by knocking out the Mexican fighter in front of his fans in Tijuana. This was supposed to celebrate Munguia, but what an absolute disaster.
Munguia looked heavier than usual inside the ring, and looked like he had not trained as hard as in his previous fights this year against Eric Bazinyan, Canelo Alvarez, and John Ryder. Jaime clearly thought he would defeat Soras without a problem, but he was wrong.
You can see that Souras is going to be a problem early after he was taken down in the second round. The Frenchman got up and landed at lightning speed on Munguia's head and was like, “Wow, where did that come from?” No one in the 168-pound division throws punches like Sauras, and Munguia wasn't seeing the right shots he was throwing.
The only reason the fight didn't end early is because Bruno, 26, didn't let go of his hands. He was mostly defensive of whatever came from Jaime, which was understandable. Munguia was showing no respect for Suracci inside the ring, throwing combinations and looking to impress the Mexican crowd with quick knockouts.
Bruno Sorace: “I know he is an excellent boxer. So, we worked on improving our counter-punching,” Soras said. “He is a real fighter. I want to thank him for this opportunity. This has been a great experience for me. Middleweight is my real weight category. But we will see if (a second fight against Munguia) is possible.”
Noise function?
It would be a bad idea for Munguia's higher-ranking promoters to set up a rematch with Surace. In the second battle, this smart guy will face him into oblivion, and Munguia is not good enough to defeat him.
If Jaime had the actual ability, they could put him with Soras again and expect him to avenge his loss. Mexican fighter Munguia can't do that. He was always protected during his 11-year career. Munguia's career will evaporate if he fights Suras again because he will likely lose. The Frenchman is smarter than him and will score another knockout.
Munguia has always been a hype mission. He was never placed with the Killers in any of the three divisions he competed in, from 154 to 168. And when he fought Canelo, he lost. He and Edgar Berlanga are the same type of fighters Manufactured records. It was just a trick.
This defeat puts Munguia's career in a bad position. He can't afford another loss. His promoters at Top Rank will need to rebuild him, but they must do so in a way that leaves him facing notable opposition.
Hardcore boxing fans have already considered Munguia an exciting prospect from day one. He has been deliberately pitted against tomato cans throughout his career to make a big money fight against Canelo Alvarez. Now that Munguia has finally achieved his goal of landing a huge payday fight against Alvarez on May 4th earlier this year, his promoters are stuck with a deeply flawed man who still needs to be protected just as much as ever.
