The office of former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Friday that she was hospitalized after suffering an unspecified injury during an official visit to Luxembourg.
Her spokesman Ian Krager said in a statement that Pelosi, 84, is “currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.”
The Democrat, who still represents California in the US House of Representatives, was traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation to Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
Pelosi “looks forward to returning home to the United States soon” and continuing to work from the hospital, Krager said.
The San Francisco congresswoman was a prominent figure in American politics during a career that spanned seven presidential administrations.
She first served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, an influential position second in line to the presidency after the Vice President, and then regained the position in 2019 after her party regained control of the House.
She resigned from the position in 2023 after two separate four-year terms in the position. But she continued to serve in the House of Representatives. Last month, she was elected to another two-year term.
Pelosi joined 17 other House members on a bipartisan trip to Luxembourg, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson's office. The delegation is scheduled to participate in anniversary events with veterans and their families, in addition to military officials.
Her spokesman said Pelosi would not be able to participate further in events.
Her injury comes just days after outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, suffered a sprained wrist and cuts to his face after falling at the US Capitol.
