Ariana DeBose Couldn't be more excited to be making her Marvel debut alongside Aaron Taylor Johnson.
“Who wouldn't want to act unlike that guy?” DeBose, 33, said exclusively Us Weekly While chatting about her upcoming movie Kraven the Hunter Monday 9 December. “It's glorious and glorious in our film.”
DeBose also shared her praise for the director J.C. Chandorof which she was a fan before booking the supervillain film. “I loved his movie Margin call“, she reported. “So, I thought he had a real understanding of how to take some big risks in a world, in the Sony Marvel universe, that had already established itself, but he wanted to try something different.”
Kraven the Hunter It tells the origin story of the villain Spider-Man (played by Taylor Johnson) and how he became known as the world's greatest and baddest hunter. The film marks Taylor-Johnson's second major role at Marvel, having previously appeared as Quicksilver in 2015. Avengers: Age of Ultron.
DeBose said he wanted to play a character with superhuman strength rather than super speed we That Taylor-Johnson was committed to his physical transformation into Kraven (real name Sergei Nikolaevich Kravinov).
“I was in awe of his commitment,” she said. “I think playing a character like that, of course, there's work that you do as an actor, but it was the first time I had the opportunity to see up close the level of commitment and dedication that goes into the physicality, the preparation, you know, to change your body, build muscles, strengthen muscles. There's a real scientific process to it.
Physical fitness aside, DeBose noted that Taylor-Johnson “is also quite the comedian,” adding, “There was something he did one day in a scene and I don't know if that's what actually made the movie, but oh my God, I was… like that”. Like: “I don't know how he did that.” It was just genius. It was great.
For her part, the Oscar winner plays another famous comic book villain, Calypso, in the film, though DeBose is remaining tight-lipped about details of her version of the character. “I think Calypso is a very slippery character, or at least when I read the script, that's what I took away from it,” she explained. “And I liked the idea of playing a character like that.”
While Kraven and Calypso are romantically involved in the comics, DeBose said we Their romance is not the main focus of their on-screen relationship. “What becomes a partnership between him and Calypso, and a partnership between men and women on screen that's not always meant to be romantic, I think that can be rare in the industry,” she said. “I was very fascinated by that.”
Although he plays a character with magic in the new film, DeBose's idealistic superpower is more practical. “Maybe I'm just thinking about the readability of auras and a person's personality,” she said. we. “If I could have this as my superpower for every person I meet, so I know they're awesome, awesome.” I'll go,” or “Cool, let's have a conversation.” …like something written in your head that's like (Buzzing sounds), “This person is mentally ill.” That would be great.
Kraven the Hunter It hits theaters on Friday, December 13.
